VIDEO: MX-5/MIATA AT THE ‘RING

Looking at one in Mazda’s showroom, the MX-5/MIATA comes across as small and cute, but I.L. Motorsport’s demo NC couldn’t be further from that! (Just look at their little roadster tearing up the Nurburgring!)

You see, there’s a reason why the MX-5/MIATA is the best selling roadster of all time. Mazda’s ethos for the little drop-top – focusing on total balance rather than absolute power – is what makes this roadster so special and such a joy to drive. It’s, lightweight, nimble, agile; call it the ‘refined athlete’ if you will. And much like an athlete on the track, the MX-5/MIATA can certainly hold it’s own against bigger, more powerful rivals.

Leaving the ‘power v handling’ debate aside, I think we can all agree that the stock exhaust (see above) is the clear ‘Achilles heel’ of the speedy roadster.

The stock system has 2 major ‘bottle necks’, one on the header and one just after. Removing these alone makes a huge difference as it dramatically reduces turbulence and back pressure caused by the OEM system (see above).

Combined with the straight pipe and muffler, you’re looking at vastly improved exhaust flow as well as a weight saving of more than 35lbs!

EVENT: Tokyo Auto Salon 2016 SUMMARY

If you haven’t yet heard of Tokyo Auto Salon – a.k.a TAS – or let alone attended, it’s probably the event to go to if you want to see what JDM cars and tuning is all about. From show cars to race cars, drifters to dragsters, concepts to consumer, it’s all right here in one spot at one of the biggest automotive events to be held in Japan.

Seasoned veterans of TAS will have no doubt noticed the growing STANCE community and the presence/influence was definitely felt this year.

In contrast, FRS/86/BRZs seemed to be out in fewer numbers although hats-off to Subaru for keeping the the attendees’ interest piqued with their signature blue mean machines.

Perhaps it’s the emergence of a certain other new FR sports car on the market that’s stealing the spotlight; more on that later.

Most interestingly (or perhaps its just me) there seemed to be a recurring theme with the vast majority of exhibitors this year; make the most of what you have. Yes, we’d all love to have the latest and greatest but in all honesty manufacturers haven’t exactly provided us with much choice, as of late, when it comes to sports cars. Don’t believe me? Just imagine for a second that the FRS/86/BRZ didn’t exist…see my point? So with the slim pickings, more exhibitors instead seemed to be focusing on creating parts and demo cars based on older chassis/models…

…or platforms we never would have even considered before!

Of course, its just as refreshing to see mash-ups of old and new like this FD sporting a front end more inline with MAZDA’s newest models.

And for those who like to go back several generations more, we spotted this old skool cool Datsun Z and wide body R32 on display at the Option booth.

Of course this is just a glimpse into what TAS had to offer this year. Over the next couple of days we’ll be showcasing some of the cars that really made the show (with higher resolution images) so stay tuned!

VIDEO: AWESOME NEW AE86 VIDEO JUST DROPPED ON YOUTUBE!

This  video is one of the best AE86 videos we’ve seen in a long while… a looong while. Watching Steven Enomoto carve through the hills with his Hachiroku is just like a scene straight out of Initial D; and that’s exactly how we want owners to use these new Expreme Ti full titanium exhausts! Whilst Steve’s Hachi is rocking the under-axle TYPE-R version, there’s also an over-axle TYPE-S version that’s a little bit quieter too if you’re worried about waking the neighbors. See below for more details!

TYPE R:

Even with the stock rear bumper, the TYPE-R version looks right at home with plenty of clearance underneath, despite being an under-axle design.

TYPE S:

The TYPE-S  features the same diameter pipes as the TYPE-R (except for the muffler) but sports an over-axle design.

Side by side, you can see just how well both the exhausts hug/dodge the frame and surrounding components.

The great thing about both these exhausts is that they fit seamlessly and effortlessly straight out of the box…meaning less time in the garage and more time on the road!
